This week we are learning about how to keep our food safe from harvest through distribution. In this post, apprentices consider two questions proposed by our guest speaker, Lisa Johnson. 1. What role do gleaners have in protecting consumers’ health and 2. How are gleaners similar to a farm harvest crews, and what makes them different? Check out the comments below.
Land Ownership
This week, our apprentices are discussing land ownership and the challenges that many farmers are facing in New England. They have each selected an available property in New England and briefly outlined a hypothetical farming enterprise that describes what they would need to do to afford the land. Check out their comments below!
First Aid
The apprentices are all First Aid and CPR certified! We prioritize preventing incidents from occurring in the field, but it’s important that our crew is prepared in case something does happen.
On-Farm Food Loss
Do you ever wonder how much food is left behind in the fields? If you’ve found your way to our blog – it has probably crossed your mind! After many conversations about food waste last week, we are taking a closer look at measuring food loss on farms!
Food Waste & Gleaning
Part of Boston Area Gleaner’s vision is to decrease food waste. This week, our apprentices are reading reports about food waste, gleaning efforts across the country and what it takes to start gleaning. See their responses in the comments below!
Vegetable Research
Our apprentices take a closer look at some of BAG’s most common crops. Read the comments below to learn about the history, growing practices, market standards, and common pests for some New England Produce!
The History of Gleaning
After reading The Book of Ruth and watching Angès Varda’s The Gleaners and I, our apprentices dig into the history of gleaning and it’s connection to the evolution of Boston Area Gleaners.
